A fire door assembly includes the door, frame, hardware, closer, latching device, glazing and seals. All of it is inspected, and any deficiency has to be repaired without delay.
What the annual inspection checks
- Labels present and legible on door and frame
- No open holes or breaks in the door or frame
- Glazing and vision panels intact and listed
- Door, frame, hinges and hardware secure and functional
- No missing or broken parts
- Door clearances within the allowed limits
- Self-closing device returns the door to the fully closed position
- Coordinator operates correctly on pairs of doors
- Latching hardware engages and holds
- No auxiliary hardware that interferes with operation
- No field modifications that void the label
- Gasketing and edge seals, where required, intact
Who can perform the inspection
NFPA 80 requires a qualified person with knowledge and understanding of the operating components of the door assembly. Facilities staff can be trained and qualified, or a third-party inspector can be used. Either way, the record must show the inspector, the date, each door and the result.
Documentation surveyors expect
A complete inventory of rated door assemblies, the annual inspection record for each, deficiencies found and the repair record with completion dates. Surveyors frequently select doors from the inventory and verify them in the building.
